Motorola RIZR Z3

The Motorola RIZR Z3 (or MOTORIZR, pronounced "riser") is a sliding phone with a look reminiscent of the MOTOKRZR and other RAZR-styled phones. In fact, it has almost the same specification as the KRZR, but in a different design. It's Motorola's first sliding design phone available in the UK. With a dedicated camera key on the side, and a 5-way navigation key, soft keys and on/off keys on the main body of the phone, you can access most of the phone's functions when it is in the closed position. Slide open the phone to reveal the full numeric keypad. This is the same style of keypad used for Motorola's other superslim phones, and is easy to use. With a blue backlighting, the keypad looks very stylish when in use. At 16mm the RIZR is not as slim as the world's slimmest slider, the Samsung D900 (13mm), but is pretty slim, and looks good.

The RIZR features the latest version of Motorola's user interface, and is perhaps less awkward to use than older Motorola phones. The RIZR is not the highest spec phone available, but holds its own against other phones in this price range. The camera is a 2 megapixel device and is as good as anything Motorola have produced previously, but not in the same league as the latest top-of-the-range phones from other manufacturers. There's a video recording option and an MPEG4 video playback feature in the media player. The display is a good quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and a good resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Again, this is trailing behind the best screens from Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Nokia, but is good enough. The music player is good quality and handles a wide range of music formats, including MP3, AAC and AAC+. An optional Bluetooth stereo headset is available.

The RIZR supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity as well as USB. Whilst internal memory is limited to 16 Mbytes, the phone's memory can be expanded up to 2 Gbytes with a MicroSD memory card. The phone is quad band and has good battery life.

Overall this is a nice-looking handset, but one that lags behind the competition in most areas. It's nice to see Motorola widening the appeal of the RAZR family by adding a slide-design phone to the range, but this isn't a phone that can match the very best from Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson. Still, if you like the Motorola design and aren't a slave to specifications, then this could be a great phone for you.
