Nokia 6280

One of the star features of the 6280 is the 2-megapixel camera on the back with a tiny flash and self-portrait mirror built-in next to it. There's also a secondary VGA camera on the front for video calls.

Nokia allows you to assign video ringtones to profiles for incoming calls, either a master video for all incoming calls or one for individual contacts, which you can add at the same time as you enter a new phonebook entry.

Navigating around the new Nokia Series 40 interface shows off the 6280's snazzy high-resolution QVGA screen (320 x 240 pixels), which can display up to 262,144 colours. We had no problems reading text messages outside on sunny days, nor did we ever struggle to hear calls as the volume of the speaker can be set quite high.

Using the built-in music player, we were able to listen to MP3s and unprotected AACs (sorry, no WMAs), either stored on the 6280's meagre 10MB of internal memory or on the hot-swappable 64MB miniSD card Nokia provides in the box. Although we managed to squeeze about 16 songs on the memory card, 64MB is hardly enough to use the handset as a portable video player, even though it supports 3GP with H.263 or MPEG video files (QCIF resolution), has the same resolution and can display more colours than the video-capable iPod. There's also an FM radio tuner onboard, but this requires the supplied headset to be connected to act as an antenna.

Other applications pre-loaded on the 6280 include a Web browser, voice recorder, organiser, world clock, unit converter and three games -- Golf Tour, Rally 3D and Snake IIII. Fans of the classic time-passing game Snake will be delighted to see Nokia has developed it into a 3D cartoon-like animated game that remains true to the original.

PC connectivity is possible via or Bluetooth 2.0 or USB (cable provided) and Nokia includes a CD with synchronisation tools and drivers. Unfortunately, this software suite doesn't run on Mac OS X but now that Apple has released Boot Camp , Intel-based Mac owners can dual-boot into Windows XP if the need arises to use Nokia's software, which includes applications for backing up, synchronising Outlook or Lotus contacts, installing add-ons, transferring music, creating wallpapers and ringtones, sending SMS via your PC, and connecting to the Internet. Mac users can still access the phone as a storage device using Bluetooth.

I'm about to return my second 6280.Nokia's quality control seems to have gone out the window with this one.The two halves of the phone are loose. It rattles when you pick it up and the two halves move when you press any of the buttons. The phones firmware is buggy and both phones have shut themselves down. There are some good 6280's out there, it just seems to be pot luck as to wether you get a good one or a bad one.Shame really, as the phone has gotvery good features.Third time lucky?

This is a good phone let down by silly things that should have been adressed as follows: *The t9 is tempremental, since i have added a number of words to the dictionary, and they haven't been added when i next need to use that word. *After 1 day of using this phone dust has appeared under the screen, which is easily seen under the screens own light. *I have owned this phone for 2 days, and it has crashed at least 15 times, even when just opening a text message! *It isnt much of an mp3 player either, it doesnt read id3tags, and in video or mp3 there is no fast forward or rewind. *The battery life is appaling, it only lasts a day on an overnight charge, with average use throughout the day. *The top row of keys are two close to the bottom of the screen slider, and i keep catching my finger on it. With use i expect this will wear at the silver edge. *The connector for the headphones is not a universal one, and it is used for the usb also. The plug is difficult to insert and to remove, often with one side coming out, and the other staying in, in fear of snapping somthing off! *The top plastic silver part above the screen near the on button isnt attached well, and seems loose, only attatched with glue. Other than that its a great phone! But all these issues with it, I am going back to the vodafone store where I got it, and I know I can replace it fortunately. Such a shame though because it does have lots of functions and looks pretty decent too.

This is a good phone with a very good feature set. It is easy enough to use once you get used to it, however the use of the navi key is somewhat inconsistent and all settings are not logically grouped together. I think Sony Ericsson phones are overtaking Nokia in easy of use. Sending text messages is a little painful switching between upper and lower case: you have to press the hash key to get upper case, but then have to press it again to make the second letter lower case. In other screens such as the contacts, the second letter is automatically made lower case. Text messages should be like this as well. The camera is acceptable. The picture resolution of 1600x1200 is good, but the pictures come out quite grainy. It's still no replacement for a good digital camera. The calendar is really handy when you turn on the active standby screen to show today's appointments, but it has some bugs when using 12 hour time format. The clock on the standby screen is also quite ugly. Why Nokia didn't just use the normal easy to read digital clock I don't know. The phone occasionally resets itself even when the battery is well charged. This is made a little annoying by how long the phone takes to start up. It also starts up with a loud animation that can't be disabled as far as I can tell. This will present a problem in meetings or cinemas when you turn it back on. Contacts and appointments can be synchronized with Outlook using Bluetooth networking. This works OK, but the Nokia PC Suite adds two spaces between the first name and last name for some reason. Voice activated dialing is bad. Rather than recording your own tag, it uses speech recognition which requires you say the person's full name and often fails to recognize the name. It also associates with a contact rather than the contact's primary number, making it impractical for use with a headset (you still need to select the name using the phone's keypad). The phone came with no pre-loaded applications and only a handful of poor ringtones when I bought the handset from 3, which was quite disappointing. It's great that the phone accepts Mini SD cards, providing up to 2 gigabytes of storage. This makes the phone viable as an MP3 player. Transferring songs using PC suite isn't anywhere near as good as transferring to an iPod using iTunes, but it gets the job done for occasional use. The basics are all there, so it's still a good phone, but the polish on this phone is below average. Hopefully there will be an updated version that addresses these problems.

This mobile phone is great works fine for me don't know why other people are having problems though.
On my 6280 Nokia I was told that it was compatible with my tom-tom-500.
Big screen, 1 GB memory card full of MP3, pics, videos and games, playing all day .
The camera is great, the design is brilliant but the battery life is not too long.
