Nokia N95

The N95, dubbed rather ambitiously by Anssi as a "mobile multimedia computer", is the result and it is certainly is a powerful device, if not quite the ‘rrrrrrevolution' Anssi was trying to sell.

A dual slider with music/video keys on one side and a number pad on the other, the N95 grabs the attention with its integrated five megapixel camera and GPS. Anssi claimed Nokia will offer free maps for the handset which would be quite frankly stunning but let's stay calm and see what actually materialises first.

Also noteworthy is HSDPA compatibility and video playback at 30fps ("30fps that's DVD!" boasted Anssi, well no there's a bit more to it than that!) though the 2.6in display's QVGA resolution is a bit of a let down. WiFi, Bluetooth, TV Out, stereo speakers as well as podcast and RSS functionality all make an appearance.

Speaking of which, we'll not see this handset until Q1 next year when it will carry an RRP of 550 euros without contract. Hopefully by then Anssi, who described the N95 as a revolution for the mobile industry comparable to the introduction of the first laptop, will have settled down…

…sadly, I doubt it.

This Symbian smart phone is a doozy. Sporting an innovative two-way slider design, the N95 has a 5-megapixel camera, integrated GPS, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), HSPDA, 150MB of internal memory, and a Micro SD slot. The design allows you to switch between different modes; you can slide the dial pad down to make calls or slide the dedicated media keys out in the opposite directions, automatically converting the 2.6-inch QVGA screen to landscape mode. The mobile also comes with a Maps app that contains maps for more than 100 countries. The N95 is expected to start shipping in Q1 2007 for around-- yikes --$700 for an unlocked version.

Update: Add a microSD slot and 150MB of onboard memory to that list. I also didn't spell out that it has a Symbian OS (S60) which it does, obviously *slaps wrist*

- symbian smartphone SHOW in London is coming 17 October (next month) so nokia needed to roll-out something to show-off

- unlike Samsung where divisions of 3G tech and smartphones are 2 totally different divisions and that's why still many Samsung smartphones are weak on 3G side (Samsung i600 with HSDPA will cure it a bit), nokia smartphones were always strong in 3G area

-HTC was first with smart phone with HSDPA and nokia will be late - next year 2007 but better late than never, right? Once again nokia is late with new wireless tech, the same was with GPRS when nokia communicators were released without GPRS although other PDA phones and the same is now. In the end this small delay with HSDPA tech will howoever not matter much

- HTC p-ssed me off by not putting HSDPA into HTC Breeze/mteor - i.e. in touchscreen-less smartphone - only using it in Pocket PC phones (HTC Hermes) and if HTC will not release MS Smartphone with HSDPA then nokia will be ahead in area of “HSDPA in small smartphone without touch screen” (althoug Samsung i600 may be the remedy if only Samsung will manage to start sales of this HSDPA smartphone before Christmas 2006).

- nokia n95 has some amazing high-tech features: HSDPA (!), video calling, built-in GPS, 5 megapixel camera with good German lens, Wi-Fi, A2DP

- ... and some nice low-tech features: mini-USB connector (although lately I am mini-USB-hater), standard 3.5 mm connector so that you can use your favorite stereo headset (oh my God, I love that rubber headsets from JVC a lot), microSD (I was telling nokia long ago that SD format shoudl be used and they listened to me), stereo speakers with 3D effect, FM-radio, EDGE

- low price: 550 euro is a “smartphone without touchscreen” price not “PDA phone with touch screen” price and is very low considering HSDPA and GPS

- mobile phones with sliding keypad from Samsung were/are big success so now also nokia introduces sliding phones .

- bad thing: no touch screen - some people like it

- bad thing: only European/Japanese band of UMTS: 2100 and no support for American UMTS bands (850/1900). For comparison's sake: HTC Hermes has all 3 UMTS bands support!

- let us not forget that nokia is successful company mainly due to Finland - where nokia is located - being full member of European Union. Without Finland being in European Union nokia would never manage being worldwide number one phone manufacturer and also number one in smartphone market. This factor will also help in sales of nokia n95 on markets of European Union, where nokia phones are perceived as European and anyway European smartphone market is 40% of global smartphone market while USA is only 10%.

All in all nokia n95 is a very impressive smartphone and it could be the only one on the market with both HSDPA and GPS built-in, so HTC and competition must move faster and release something that would offer these 2 featuers in one device too!
